Delta Secures Victory in the New Year
Delta Bounces Back with a Strong Home Performance Against OCC.
The beautiful thing about conference play is that there are more game days and less time to think about the prior game. After a tough loss on Thursday night, Delta suited back up 42 hours later to take on the OCC Raiders.
A great defensive effort in the first half resulted in allowing just 19 points, giving them a 22 point lead going into the intermission. Sophomore Guard Harmany Williams led the way for Delta with 25 points while tallying seven rebounds and five assists. Freshman Makoya Denham chipped in 15 points along with seven rebounds and Sophomore Shallon Grawey added a near double-double with 12 points and nine rebounds.
"I was very proud with how the ladies came out right off the tip and attacked the basket and the boards," Head Coach Shonda Long said after the win. "Yesterday in practice our focus was on rebounding, free throws and taking care of the basketball. Every game we lost by at least 12 or less points we shot poorly from the free throw line, gave up more than 12 boards and had more than 20 turnovers."
This upcoming week for Delta they only will have one game and that will be on January 13 against Mott. A season ago, the Lady Pioneers and Bears split the season series, with each team winning on the road.
